On California's North Coast, demographics reveal a slow and steady growth rate (16.6% over the last 20 years), compared to the rapid rate of growth to the south. As urban areas to the south become increasingly congested, more and more people are moving northward into still lightly populated areas of Humboldt, Del Norte and Trinity Counties. This recent wave of development and population increase has caused skyrocketing land values, forcing subdivision and development of North Coast lands.

Our Accomplishments

Formed in 2000, the Northcoast Regional Land Trust works with conservationists, ranchers, farmers, timberland managers, natural resource scientists, environmental advocates, and residents to protect one of the last best places on Earth. Together we have accomplished and continue to work on the following:

  • Conserved more than 9,000 acres of ranch, farm, and timber land, including projects under our Six Rivers to the Sea Initiative, eliminating future subdivision and development.
  • Protected 320 acres of old- and mature- growth forest with salmon-spawning streams.
  • Monitor more than 8,500 acres of forest, pasture and rangeland properties in partnership with agency and landowner stewards.
  • Work in partnership to conserve nearly 30,000 acres of working ranches as part of the Six Rivers to the Sea Initiative.
  • Manage the restoration of 132 acres of estuarine habitat and tidelands in two counties while promoting low impact agriculture. In 2009, NRLT conducted resotration activities on Freshwater Farms Reserve. Read more on the restoration project. Read press on the project.
  • Facilitate public access on normally restricted private property through naturalist-led events.
  • Engage our diverse community to develop a 100-year common vision for land use planning.
